Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy

Equine-assisted psychotherapy is a form of therapy deploying horses. They’re involved in a current therapy to consolidate it or to extend the treatment process. Scientific research proves the positive effect of animal-assisted therapy, e.g. in the area of motivation, self-confidence, contact establishment, stress release, relaxation, improvement of clients’ state of depression, and many more.

In a safe environment, client and horse meet under the supervision of the therapist. This usually doesn’t involve riding, but takes place from the ground. No prior experience with horses is required. The horse is the “fellow coach”, acting as a source of change or medium for communication. It helps shaping the treatment process, keeping it going. During the encounter, the therapist initiates interventions which serve the client’s psychological recovery and stabilization. Such an experience is distinct, memorable, and has a lasting impact. In a concluding discussion, the experience is transferred to the client’s everyday life.

    Riding Education

    What Is Riding Education?
Riding education can encompass different pedagogic backgrounds, such as curative education (remedial care with the horse) or experiential education. Riding education uses a pedagogic approach working with children and adolescents, with the horse acting as a medium. The horse encourages and facilitates interpersonal abilities and involves physical activity. By establishing a special connection, the animal is also capable of reaching children with disabilities and behavioral disorders. Mostly, work takes place in small groups in order to benefit from social learning with the horse. Physical activity doesn’t miss out here either, since the horse can especially provide psychomotoric learning experiences.

The contact with horses contributes to one’s general wellbeing and encourages social integration, the ability to build relationships, and one’s self-esteem. It has a stress-reducing effect, serves as an overall activator and stimulator, reinforces problem-solving abilities, and improves the ability to deal with emotions and affective reactions appropriately.
Returners or riders with anxieties are also in the best of hands (or hooves) with our well-trained horses.
It’s a joy to regain confidence in oneself and the horse. We proceed carefully here, with you setting the pace and defining the contents. Our trained horses Oasis, Gamil, and Domino are highly successful “confidence boosters” and patient teachers.

Goals of the riding lessons are:

    • basic knowledge of the mindset of the horse as a flight animal and its learning behavior
    • establishing a communication basis between you and the horse
    • increasing awareness
    • fostering attentiveness
    • enhancing intuition for you and the horse
    • relaxation and harmony

    Horse Therapy

    What Is Horse Therapy?

Horse therapy is a holistic concept that attempts to achieve individual support and a favorable development for people by using the horse as a medium.

According to modern horse therapy, everyone carries the potential within themselves to develop and grow. During therapy, the horse acts as a central vehicle for motivation, making children as well as adults excel and unlock their own abilities. The encounter with the being horse and the physical movement with and on the horse helps people to activate their self-healing powers. No prior experience with horses is required to benefit from such a treatment.

How Do I Recognize Qualified Therapeutic Service?

Horse therapy can be practiced by various professional groups, such as psychologists, certified (social) pedagogues, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, childcare specialists working in the field of child protective services, or other professionals obtaining additional qualification as a horse therapist. A qualified professional obtains a certificate from a renowned training organization and regularly participates in further training. Only acknowledged professionals are allowed admittance to the German Professional Association of Equine-Assisted Interventions.

The therapy horses are kept in natural conditions, trained regularly, and deployed responsibly.

For Whom Is Horse Therapy Suitable?

People with the following clinical conditions can benefit from horse therapy:

    • multiple sclerosis (MS)
    • stroke, previous coma patients
    • ataxia
    • rheumatism, postural deformities, osteoarthrosis, hip dysplasia, back pain
    • paraplegia
    • depression
    • burnout
    • development disorders and delays (restricted motoric skills and perceptions, speech impediments)
    • mental disabilities
    • cerebral palsy (spasm)
    • Attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder (ADD, ADHD), learning disabilities, concentration disorders
    • anxiety disorders, eating disorders
    • PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)

    • previous tumor patients
    • trauma

    What Are Equine-Assisted Interventions?

Equine-Assisted Interventions is the umbrella term for the various areas of application concerning horse therapy. It’s based on findings of the core sciences, i.e. from the medical field, psychology, sports science, and education. It should always aim at motoric, sensual, cognitive, linguistic, psychological, or social support, noticeable in a therapeutic, athletic, health-promoting, or work-related context. It’s important to always keep the personality development in mind.

Information about academic resources can be found at GREAT (German Research Center for Equine-Assisted Therapy).

    Burnout and Stress Prevention

    What Does Burnout Actually Mean?

Burnout syndrome is described as a condition of generalized emotional fatigue and exhaustion with depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment. It can be seen as the final state in a line of development starting with idealistic enthusiasm, and due to frustrating experiences resulting in disillusionment and apathy, psychosomatic symptoms, depression, or increased erratic behavior, and an amplified danger of addiction.

    Burnout prevention:

Many people are increasingly challenged by the management of constant stress. A preventive approach against burnout aims at newly defining time and efficiency. People taking their physical and psychological state seriously won’t be as susceptible to the stress trap, will be able to get back on the right track sooner respectively.

With horses involved, clients are capable of telling the difference between joyful work and overstrain faster than for themselves. On the other hand, horses serve as good role models here, considering that, while being able to feel stress, horses will immediately try to escape it and tend to their own wellbeing again.

Being guided, the horse conveys its own rhythmic, calming movements to the person. The transferred three-dimensional wave impulses have regulative effects on the muscular tone, and strengthen sensory motor skills, and physical as well as sensory coordination. Combined with relaxation techniques, e.g. progressive muscle relaxation, an optimal efficiency increase can be achieved.

The soothing appeal of these wonderful animals in an environment designed as natural as possible emphasizes the content input, creating a long-lasting effect that has significantly more impact than other therapies in this area.

I also offer consultation sessions on this topic. In an initial interview, we’ll assess your personal needs and analyze your situation. Then we’ll set goals together and define the steps needed to achieve them. In the following, I’ll guide you in implementing new solutions step by step. In a holistically designed process, your personal skills and coping strategies for the situation will be constantly improved and strengthened. At the end of our cooperation, the mutual working process will be evaluated in a comprehensive feedback discussion.

    • rediscover yourself with your partner the horse
    • experience yourself with the help of the horse
    • heighten perception and increase awareness, using all your senses
    • prevent and counteract loads, stress, and feeling overwhelmed in a timely manner
    • sorting your thoughts, observe oneself, noticing changes
    • experience your own body in an entirely new way
    • allowing yourself to be carried – experiencing to feel safe and sound

      Mobile Riding Lessons

In Portugal I offer you riding lessons according to the principles of the Academic Art of Riding by Bent Brenderup. Since Spring 2016, I’ve been a member of the Escuela Equitabilis by Sabine Oettel (master of Natural Horsemanship). I’ve been enthusiastically training my own horses for seven years based on this logical and refined concept. The logical sequential structure in combination with a profound understanding for the horse and its needs, as well as the consideration of biomechanical connections and ergonomic principles, result in a relaxed and successful training. My concern is to accompany my students on their joyful learning journey. Man and horse learn how to communicate with, understand, and rely on each other. With this foundation, the sky is the limit for the rider-horse team. They’ll have a lot of fun and live in harmony, which is important for a long, healthy journey together.

      Horses love this training!

You can find me on Facebook together with my colleague Vivi (Reitkunst Karlsruhe). Our page provides event information, appointments etc., contacts, information about horsemanship and the art of riding. Under appointments on this website the horsemanship seminars are listed that are planned for this year.

      Seat Training

Understanding movement requires feeling, not effort. Moshé Feldenkrais

All riding styles emphasize the significance of sitting in the saddle correctly. The interpretation of a proper position may vary, depending on intentions (show jumping and dressage, endurance …).

The seat is the only aid that can’t be taken away or made invisible.

As soon as we mount the horse, we’re up there, affecting the horse–intentionally or subconsciously.

The balance of the horse is changed by the mere impact of our weight. This is why the seat can be considered the most important of all aids.

I offer you an individual seating program tailored to your needs, since everyone is unique, with their very own physical as well as psychological conditions.

Learn to feel your body in a whole new way, combining elements from the Feldenkrais Method, Centered Riding, Pilates, Yoga, the Meyners Method, breathing exercises and other approaches.

Easily achieved exercises allow you to successfully experience all parts of the body as a harmonic combination. Unnecessary tensions and pain fade, making way for balance, ease, and a better sense for movement.

The aim is learning how to purposefully use your own body so that you can achieve what all riders strive for: completely and effortlessly becoming one with the horse.

      Horse Therapy and Trauma

Trauma pedagogy applies scientific knowledge psycho-traumatic analysis and educational theory to equine-assisted work.

        Goals of trauma pedagogy are:

        • stabilization
        • self-empowerment
        • enabling positive relationship experiences in order to make clients feel embraced, recognized, and supported
        • reinforcing self-awareness of sensations and emotions
        • providing support with the regulation of emotions and impulses
        • activating coping strategies, self-empowerment through biography work, and self-help

        Individual Coaching

        Suitable for whom?

Equine-assisted coaching is for independents, mothers, fathers, managers at all levels, spouses, … all psychologically healthy, open-minded people who want to:

        • strengthen their personality
        • retrieve their gut feeling
        • find congruence internally and externally
        • evolve
        • move on from a (private or professional) crisis to a good, exhilarating life
        • change
        • expand their strengths and potential
        • build genuine confidence and leadership
        • improve their communication skills
        • (re)discover bravery, security, and assertiveness
        • increase awareness, empathy, and interpersonal abilities

Why Is Equine-Assisted Coaching This Successful?

Horses stimulate humans’ senses with their charisma.

They’re gentle, incorruptible, highly sensitive beings that mirror their counterpart in the most truthful way possible. Their highly developed social and herd behavior makes them particularly suitable for this kind of work. Impressively honest, these animals provide you a meaningful feedback on your own behavior.

Equine-assisted coaching sessions are an effective, long-lasting method to experience oneself in the here and now and to develop more lightness–not only in the mind, but also in the heart. It’s not a coincidence that the market is overflowing, making management trainings this successful.

Horses are experts in perceiving gestures and facial expressions, which makes them ideal partners in order to enable self-reflection and changes in perspective. They reduce anxiety and stress, communicate nonverbally, and don’t judge based on our criteria. They accept us for who we are and don’t bear grudges.

The innovational training concept with the horse as a partner provides you with support and effectively engages you to achieve inner strength and develop self-knowledge.

        How does the session work?

A session takes 60 minutes. After determining the goal in a 15-minute preliminary talk, we do ground work with the horse on this subject in a safe environment for 30 minutes. No prior knowledge concerning horses is needed. I take responsibility for either one’s safety. After the practical experience, we have a transfer meeting in the conference room to discuss what you witnessed. The knowledge and insight can be transferred one on one to your everyday life. At any time in the session, the client decides what and how long they’re in for. Based on sympathy, you get to pick your furry coaching partner yourself. My fellow co-workers have very different personalities. Some enjoy working together, there are horses that know what to do, being leaders themselves, there are those with a great physical and psychological presence, and horses that like to fool around every now and again. You’ll see that you can almost always trust your gut feeling on making the right choice.

How Much Does One Session Cost?

The individual coaching is individually tailored to your personal requirements and needs. The price for the individual coaching session (60 minutes) is €119.

What Do I Have to Bring?

Weatherproof clothing and solid shoes, possibly a notepad to record important thoughts and findings. I recommend you not to make appointments and to take yourself some time after the coaching experience so that you can process your experiences.

          About Me

I’m a certified horse therapist, horse riding instructor, and coach in Portugal. Sharing my knowledge in presentations, seminars, and courses, I combine my equine-assisted coaching competence with experiences from other areas: in my work as a burnout and stress consultant I accompany people in private and professional processes of reflection and change.

During a coaching session, I revert to various methods and instruments to help the client in finding new options for action in order to resolve conflicts, a crisis, or overcome barriers. In this respect, I put emphasis on a conscious and attentive approach to language, given that our language use influences our way of thinking and acting.

In a solution and goal-focused setting I apply a variety of interventions that make the client reach their goal in the quickest and most effective way. As an experienced pedagogue I have highly effective methods at my disposal to be able to detect thought and action patterns and to motivate them through language. Thus, change processes can be reinforced in order to strengthen the client’s self-confidence.

Within work with equine-assisted psychotherapy in cooperation with various psychologists’ offices I develop individually tailored contents, mediate essential experience, and provide important impulses for the participants concerning their own role and identity.

          Fellow Coaches

Oasis (Arabian-berber horse) is our charmer: He knows how to make people laugh with his fooling around. He takes good care of his clients and is a patient teacher. With him, you can easily learn how to be clear and unambiguous.

Gamil (barb horse) is great at mirroring the strengths of his counterpart. He’s people-oriented and very empathetic.

Domino is our sturdy Black Forest cold blood who joined our team more recently in 2015. His character is very people-oriented and he’s a quick learner. His broad back and his double-sided blonde mane provide great security.

The wellbeing and the best possible care of our horses are particularly close to our heart. We’re aware of horses being the core of our work, which is why we consider the aspects of animal protection and their health important. Thus, we make sure that in our weekly deployment, each horse has at least two days to rest. The horses are deployed no more than three times a day and are given recreational breaks on the premises with their fellow horses in-between. In compensation, every day they receive individual training tailored to their needs, either relaxation and/or muscle development, in order to keep them physically and mentally in shape.

In maintaining their health, the way how you manage the horses plays a crucial role. No horse belongs in a stall. Horses are genetically disposed to run and need to be in the open air. This is the reason why we built a paddock trail for them, taking the latest findings in horse management into account:

The spacious premises provide everything horses need: contact to fellow horses, sufficient exercise and recreation (long walking trails with various ground conditions, large paddocks, sand paddocks for playing and resting purposes, fresh air 24/7 on 365 days a year (different climate conditions), a 24/7 food range (from our own production) and protection against wind and the weather in open stalls.

It is our primary objective to promote the physical and mental health of our horses, to maintain their fitness, and to help them evolve. They may and are supposed to have their own opinion and distinct personality. They’re regularly trained from the ground and in the saddle based on the principles of Natural Horsemanship and have enjoyed a considerate education.

This is the only way they can be authentic and valuable partners in therapy!

It’s possible for you to do an internship with us in the beautiful scenery of Portugal. If you’re interested, don’t hesitate to contact me. We’ll discuss the details in person.
